[00:00:38] [SPEAKER_04]: them, it's time for another episode of…

[00:00:45] [SPEAKER_04]: This week we had the honor to be humbled by voice acting legend Rob Paulsen. We talk about

[00:00:50] [SPEAKER_04]: his career, his views on fame and just nerd out on his generous nature. So get your copy

[00:00:58] [SPEAKER_00]: ready to take over the world. It's…

[00:01:04] [SPEAKER_04]: Alright guys back here with Distance NERDing podcast and I got a nice little intro for you

[00:01:10] [SPEAKER_04]: here. So we have a very special guest for you all. He's known for voicing Raphael

[00:01:14] [SPEAKER_04]: in the 1987 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoon, Yaco Warner and the Animaniacs,

[00:01:19] [SPEAKER_04]: Pinky and Pinky and the Brain, Carl Weezer and Jimmy Neutron boy genius, Hodgy and

[00:01:24] [SPEAKER_04]: Johnny Quest, Donatello and the 2012 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Dude he does everything.

[00:01:29] [SPEAKER_04]: He's the voice of your childhood ladies and gentlemen. He's won Daytime Emmy Award for

[00:01:35] [SPEAKER_04]: Outstanding Performance in an Animated Program and three Annie Awards for his pinkie, for

[00:01:40] [SPEAKER_04]: his role as Pinky. And he's also a… well he used to be the host of the show Talking

[00:01:44] [SPEAKER_04]: Tunes but ladies and gentlemen gotta tell you how much I'm gushing right now. We

[00:01:48] [SPEAKER_04]: got Rob Paulsen with us. Oh my goodness.

[00:01:50] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah I'm so excited I want to just poop my little pink pants. Nerve.

[00:01:57] [SPEAKER_03]: Right off the bat. Thanks man. That's how we work. After that really wonderful, auspicious

[00:02:05] [SPEAKER_03]: intro I'm already lushing so thank you very much. That's your portfolio, that's your

[00:02:09] [SPEAKER_04]: resume. That's just like a small smidgen-tibbon piece of it.

[00:02:15] [SPEAKER_03]: Well thanks man and folks you guys know this because you're fans of the show but

[00:02:18] [SPEAKER_03]: these boys are really decent people. They are so nice they came over yesterday, went

[00:02:22] [SPEAKER_03]: out of their way to make time to talk to me about coming to do the show. We're so

[00:02:27] [SPEAKER_03]: patient today again so you guys have hit your wagon to a really great podcast and

[00:02:32] [SPEAKER_04]: I'm very very very happy to be here. Oh man we appreciate that. That makes me feel

[00:02:35] [SPEAKER_06]: even better. Pleasure. And true. And Philippe's crying as we speak. I am very much. Not a boy Philippe.

[00:02:40] [SPEAKER_04]: And I've mentioned I have three bucket list people that I've always wanted on the show.

[00:02:47] [SPEAKER_04]: You is one of them and that's why I'm kind of like you know giddy and excited.

[00:02:52] [SPEAKER_04]: Very kind. Yeah and then Mark Hamill. Great good choice. And Kevin Smith. Another great choice.

[00:02:57] [SPEAKER_04]: There you go. So those are like the three and this like okay if I get those three I retire.

[00:03:01] [SPEAKER_04]: I'm done. Well you're 33 and there's a third percent. There we go. That's a good baseball.

[00:03:05] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah if you know what if you got if you hit that well in a lifetime you'd be in

[00:03:09] [SPEAKER_06]: the hall. Yeah exactly. Betting 330. You're in the hall of fame of voice acting.

[00:03:14] [SPEAKER_03]: So come on now. But I was you know and I appreciate that you guys are giving me

[00:03:19] [SPEAKER_03]: the Jews. It's really sweet and you know it's the way Hollywood works. The people

[00:03:23] [SPEAKER_03]: who are the performers get the recognition all that. But all of us myself Mark

[00:03:28] [SPEAKER_03]: Lee's Trevor Trest McNeil Nancy Carr right here all not only so grateful and

[00:03:33] [SPEAKER_03]: where we always make sure that we remind people that we don't draw them. We

[00:03:38] [SPEAKER_03]: don't write them and we are obviously integral to the equation. But man I

[00:03:43] [SPEAKER_03]: can't even draw stick figures in the way that people so much time and energy

[00:03:47] [SPEAKER_03]: love and creativity. Animation I think is is unique in that when it's done at a

[00:03:54] [SPEAKER_03]: really high level it's pretty much timeless and yeah it is utterly transcendent.

[00:04:00] [SPEAKER_03]: It's stuff you can watch the hundred years later like if you watch Bambi you

[00:04:04] [SPEAKER_03]: see the way leaves kind of float to the ground in the forest. That was all

[00:04:08] [SPEAKER_03]: done by hand back 1940 or whatever it was and it's gorgeous stuff. Right so

[00:04:13] [SPEAKER_03]: yeah that art the animation art form is something I'm or even the

[00:04:17] [SPEAKER_06]: rotoscoping. Oh it's so beautiful. Yeah it really is and it feels real even though

[00:04:22] [SPEAKER_03]: we're looking at a yeah animation. It's it's incredible and so to be able to work

[00:04:26] [SPEAKER_03]: with the people who make this stuff look the way it does is just and I've had

[00:04:31] [SPEAKER_03]: more than my share of the shows that I've had the privilege of working on and

[00:04:34] [SPEAKER_03]: lived long enough to see that some of them have become arguably iconic and

[00:04:38] [SPEAKER_03]: they've sort of transcended generations and that's what very much

[00:04:41] [SPEAKER_03]: conventions are so great. I get to see parents with their kids or grandparents

[00:04:45] [SPEAKER_03]: parents with their kids and their grandkids who all love pinking the rain

[00:04:48] [SPEAKER_03]: or all love Ninja Turtles. Yeah so we have this segment on our show called

[00:04:52] [SPEAKER_04]: growing up geeky. Oh right. How about that? Right exactly. What's something

[00:04:57] [SPEAKER_03]: that you used to geek out on as a kid. Well for me it Looney Tunes for

[00:05:01] [SPEAKER_03]: sure. I remember just we just talking about watching Looney Tunes with my mom

[00:05:05] [SPEAKER_03]: and dad and Flintstones and my four kids in my family Flintstones Jetsons.

[00:05:10] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah. And all the Hannibal beer. Yep Johnny Quest was a primetime show

[00:05:13] [SPEAKER_03]: on Saturday night on ABC. I was a kid. I love Johnny Quest. So yeah I geeked

[00:05:19] [SPEAKER_03]: out on that sports. I'm a big hockey not a group in Michigan. I've got my red

[00:05:23] [SPEAKER_03]: wings hat on today and ground wrap. Yep. I went to Michigan and Michigan beat

[00:05:28] [SPEAKER_03]: the daylights at a house state last weekend and they included a 13 undefeated

[00:05:33] [SPEAKER_03]: season streak yesterday so I'm very proud of that but yeah for me it

[00:05:37] [SPEAKER_03]: was cartoons sports and fast cars. I'm particularly Formula One. I love

[00:05:42] [SPEAKER_04]: racing. I'm here in Watson to get along real great. All right. Yeah. One of

[00:05:46] [SPEAKER_03]: our buddies and sports cars. I mean I'm unfortunate I get to have one bad

[00:05:50] [SPEAKER_03]: ass car at a time and I drive the hell out of it so I've lived my own dream

[00:05:54] [SPEAKER_03]: but I'll tell you what I did like a lot of actors geek out on Looney Tunes

[00:05:59] [SPEAKER_03]: and I had the unbelievable privilege of working a blank a couple times. Oh wow.

[00:06:03] [SPEAKER_03]: And the last time I've worked on twice and the last time at Hannah

[00:06:08] [SPEAKER_03]: Barbera working on a Jetsons project it was probably 18 and it was just

[00:06:12] [SPEAKER_03]: probably a year before he passed away late 70s early 80s and the wonderful

[00:06:17] [SPEAKER_03]: director of the late great Gordon Hunt at Hannah Barbera Helen Hunt's father

[00:06:21] [SPEAKER_03]: Oh wow. And directed all the cartoons of Smurfs and Johnny Quest and Jetsons

[00:06:25] [SPEAKER_03]: and all that stuff called me up and he said hey Robbie Mel blank is going

[00:06:28] [SPEAKER_03]: to be sitting next to me so sat next to Mr. Blank out my hand is

[00:06:33] [SPEAKER_03]: pleasure me just young man I said thank you very much Mr. Blank so

[00:06:36] [SPEAKER_03]: finally I thought you know you're not going to get this chance again I'm

[00:06:39] [SPEAKER_03]: geeking out right so Mr. Blank like anyone with a pulse I'm such a fan and

[00:06:43] [SPEAKER_03]: you've done so much to me in my childhood would it be too much of course

[00:06:47] [SPEAKER_03]: I didn't have a phone to record it or anything those days so he knew what I

[00:06:50] [SPEAKER_03]: wanted takes off his glasses and looks at me says yeah what's up doc

[00:06:54] [SPEAKER_03]: and you guys that's all it took I was gone I was it was a mixture of

[00:07:00] [SPEAKER_03]: joy nostalgia I'm not ashamed to say I got a little tearful it really

[00:07:04] [SPEAKER_03]: hit me and it taught me how when it's done again at that level right as an

[00:07:08] [SPEAKER_03]: actor as gifted as Mel blank and artwork Chuck Jones and Bob McKimson and

[00:07:14] [SPEAKER_03]: let's create Warner Brothers and the music by Carl Stalling right when it

[00:07:18] [SPEAKER_03]: comes together it is utterly magical and just yeah what's up doc a sound

[00:07:24] [SPEAKER_03]: in three words put me away right and now thanks to people like you and

[00:07:30] [SPEAKER_03]: the lovely folks who listen I am not in the position to compare myself to

[00:07:34] [SPEAKER_03]: Mel blank that's not the point point is that I've gotten a chance to work on

[00:07:38] [SPEAKER_03]: characters which have the same effect on people and you've seen it yeah weekend

[00:07:41] [SPEAKER_03]: people stand in line they could be 18 they could be 30 they could be 50 right

[00:07:45] [SPEAKER_03]: and if I say hey God hello nice to meet you sometimes they just go Jesus give

[00:07:50] [SPEAKER_03]: me a second I'm not sure what's happening I know exactly what's

[00:07:53] [SPEAKER_03]: happening right happened to me and what a gift it is to me to see that

[00:07:58] [SPEAKER_03]: yeah so I get the whole what did you geek out part yeah and I've gotten to live

[00:08:03] [SPEAKER_03]: it and see it from the other side and it's not about money about ratings not

[00:08:07] [SPEAKER_03]: about action figures it's about a pure expression of love and joy and nostalgia

[00:08:12] [SPEAKER_03]: and often I hear I hear I had a great childhood and you're such a big

[00:08:16] [SPEAKER_03]: part of now here's my family or I hear people who say Mr. Paulson but

[00:08:20] [SPEAKER_03]: my child who's a mess and we're not for Ninja Turtles or SpongeBob you

[00:08:25] [SPEAKER_03]: know we all hear it right I can't tell you what got me through my parents

[00:08:30] [SPEAKER_03]: acrimonious divorce or the fact that my brother was killed in a car name it

[00:08:34] [SPEAKER_03]: yeah right that's the stuff that absolutely blows my mind and and so I'm

[00:08:39] [SPEAKER_03]: young enough to travel around and handle the rigors but I'm old enough to

[00:08:43] [SPEAKER_03]: have a legacy of characters and I thanks to you thanks to people who watch

[00:08:47] [SPEAKER_03]: the fans I am living an impossibly wonderful dream so nothing but

[00:08:52] [SPEAKER_06]: gratitude from up from my side we have so much gratitude for you because

[00:08:55] [SPEAKER_06]: exactly what you're saying happened to us last night at the improv show my god

[00:08:59] [SPEAKER_06]: we all went to the improv show so amazing so amazing seeing all you guys

[00:09:04] [SPEAKER_06]: thank you man together was amazing but then when you did the enemy any act

[00:09:07] [SPEAKER_06]: song with the country I was like oh my gosh what's funny is James is like

[00:09:12] [SPEAKER_04]: he still knows a song though he sings that song every night I do and you

[00:09:16] [SPEAKER_03]: know thank you for that and when Randy Rogel who wrote that and most of

[00:09:21] [SPEAKER_03]: the songs you know from the original Anna maniacs we have a wonderful deal

[00:09:24] [SPEAKER_03]: with Warner Brothers by which we're able to go and do the music of Anna maniacs

[00:09:28] [SPEAKER_03]: live around okay orchestras nice and when we do that song we always end

[00:09:32] [SPEAKER_03]: with that and it's like our stairway to heaven you know people lose their minds

[00:09:36] [SPEAKER_03]: and people are always very kind and say oh my god how did you memorize that

[00:09:40] [SPEAKER_03]: song how did you do it look I'm really good at my job but I ought to be man

[00:09:43] [SPEAKER_03]: we're in Hollywood you can throw a dart and hit a good singer what you

[00:09:47] [SPEAKER_03]: can't do is throw a dart and hit somebody who writes that stuff right and

[00:09:50] [SPEAKER_03]: that's the trick what I do and I'm not it's not short selling my talent I'm

[00:09:55] [SPEAKER_03]: good at my job but once you you know know that it's a two and a half minute

[00:09:58] [SPEAKER_03]: parlor trick that makes people go nuts yeah makes me so happy but writing

[00:10:03] [SPEAKER_03]: is pretty miraculous oh yeah and then when you put in the context of all

[00:10:07] [SPEAKER_03]: the other stuff that Randy wrote like a Christmas song you run a Emmy for

[00:10:11] [SPEAKER_03]: two spells Santa's name is easy to do you write s a n t but another a two and

[00:10:20] [SPEAKER_03]: no well no well Santa's name has no well are you kidding me yeah it's genius yeah

[00:10:27] [SPEAKER_03]: it really is over and over and that's that's the real nuts and bolts of why

[00:10:32] [SPEAKER_06]: those songs work that's so awesome I love how you said it was your

[00:10:35] [SPEAKER_06]: stairway to heaven I'm like I'm thinking somebody yelling out do free bird

[00:10:38] [SPEAKER_03]: I don't think it's your free bird yeah it goes world dude I drunk a gallon of

[00:10:43] [SPEAKER_03]: palm water no it's great so thank I'm so glad you enjoyed the show we had a

[00:10:48] [SPEAKER_04]: blast I just hear Mark every time you do that voice man just great yeah Mark

[00:10:52] [SPEAKER_06]: Chang totally a Mugopitamia you mentioned meeting Mel blank but like

[00:10:58] [SPEAKER_06]: do you have any other fun behind-the-scenes stories I always love

[00:11:02] [SPEAKER_06]: the behind-the-scenes like pulling the curtain back and seeing how voice

[00:11:05] [SPEAKER_06]: actors work together get along because the chemistry that was on stage last night

[00:11:10] [SPEAKER_03]: it was thank you for saying that and it's utterly authentic yeah I've heard a

[00:11:15] [SPEAKER_03]: number of times this weekend and it's a refrain that is very common that I

[00:11:18] [SPEAKER_03]: hear from fans who say you know I go to a lot of these are I've been to other

[00:11:22] [SPEAKER_03]: things where I met me a lot of movie guys and I gotta tell you the voice

[00:11:25] [SPEAKER_03]: actor seemed like the nicest most down to earth people and we are I mean

[00:11:29] [SPEAKER_03]: it's up to people to judge if I am but the people with whom I work

[00:11:32] [SPEAKER_03]: are precisely what you saw last night really gifted but utterly devoted

[00:11:37] [SPEAKER_03]: pretense down to earth I'll talk to you forever yeah you're talking about

[00:11:41] [SPEAKER_03]: Phil Lamar are you kidding me that guy is from another planet yeah Freddie

[00:11:45] [SPEAKER_03]: Tata shores like your big fluffy uncle I love Fred I love Fred I love Phil

[00:11:49] [SPEAKER_04]: they were both awesome Mark doing nothing but pie jokes and that was all

[00:11:56] [SPEAKER_03]: Mark Decarlo that put that together took him two months to wrangle us

[00:12:00] [SPEAKER_03]: all together so he's the guy that deserves the kudos but we can he was

[00:12:04] [SPEAKER_04]: cracking me up the whole time oh my god mean Fred went to go take a picture

[00:12:08] [SPEAKER_04]: and can he's just dancing on the side like can you get over here take a

[00:12:10] [SPEAKER_03]: picture let's go greatest well and I think the reason is that we have no

[00:12:15] [SPEAKER_03]: reason not to be joyful we also get that it's the characters or the

[00:12:19] [SPEAKER_03]: stars I said earlier we're very aware that doesn't work unless we all do

[00:12:24] [SPEAKER_03]: it but people by and large don't walk don't walk down the street say oh

[00:12:28] [SPEAKER_03]: my god there's Fred Tata shore or oh my god there's Rob Paulson now thanks to

[00:12:32] [SPEAKER_03]: people like you yeah it happens more I get recognized probably half a dozen

[00:12:36] [SPEAKER_03]: times a month at different places and once people find out who I am then

[00:12:39] [SPEAKER_03]: it's fantastic right but people love yeah they love ya go they love Rafael

[00:12:45] [SPEAKER_03]: they love Donatello they love Carol and his croissant and most of them I

[00:12:50] [SPEAKER_03]: would say I can't verify this but if there are 50 million people who love

[00:12:54] [SPEAKER_03]: Yaakov Warner they most of them probably couldn't say offhand what the name

[00:12:58] [SPEAKER_03]: of the actor is who provides the voice right and that's fine it's about the

[00:13:02] [SPEAKER_03]: character bugs bunny is a movie star and our job is to make the soul and the

[00:13:07] [SPEAKER_03]: voice of the character the utterly inseparable right from the visual

[00:13:11] [SPEAKER_03]: right and but man you're right the actors who do this are the most

[00:13:15] [SPEAKER_03]: down-to-earth and when we get a chance to work with movie stars come

[00:13:18] [SPEAKER_03]: into a show like the number of times that I've worked with Frank

[00:13:22] [SPEAKER_03]: Welker yeah who's a megatron a god at this point yeah well

[00:13:26] [SPEAKER_03]: well Chris Wilker is a guy ten years older than I and to the day with the

[00:13:30] [SPEAKER_03]: same birthday and one of my dearest friends I live five minutes from Frank

[00:13:33] [SPEAKER_03]: play golf with him a hundred times and he is a freaking God in this business so

[00:13:37] [SPEAKER_03]: the number of times that I've worked out about behind the scenes we were

[00:13:41] [SPEAKER_03]: doing an episode of a show called hysteria which was another Warner Brothers

[00:13:45] [SPEAKER_03]: show produced by Tom Luger who did Anna Maniacs and precozoid and all

[00:13:48] [SPEAKER_03]: and we were doing an episode with the actor was it was Oh it was Ernest

[00:13:54] [SPEAKER_03]: Borgnein oh wow passed away but Kale and he won an Oscar for I was surely back

[00:14:02] [SPEAKER_03]: with a sheba I don't remember anyway look up Ernest Borgnein he's a freaking TV

[00:14:06] [SPEAKER_03]: movie star I grew up watching Mikhail's Navy right so it blew my mind when I

[00:14:10] [SPEAKER_03]: got to work with Ernest Borgnein okay so he's a movie star walks into work

[00:14:14] [SPEAKER_03]: and out of a nicer sitting down start to work and Frank has something where

[00:14:17] [SPEAKER_03]: he's doing like a monster or creature or something and it was time for Mr. Borgnein

[00:14:21] [SPEAKER_03]: to say his line and he just was transfixed by Frank and director Andrea Omanos said

[00:14:26] [SPEAKER_03]: sorry Ernest Borgnein is next and he said I don't know what you're expecting me

[00:14:31] [SPEAKER_03]: but I can't do that I mean I'm I can do me and I'll tweak it and I can take

[00:14:37] [SPEAKER_03]: direction but he was probably already in his mid-seventies right and he was

[00:14:41] [SPEAKER_03]: just so utterly transfixed by Frank and he was intimidated yeah and he wasn't

[00:14:47] [SPEAKER_03]: afraid to admit it he said look my agent called me and said I got this gig and I

[00:14:51] [SPEAKER_03]: love working as Warner Brothers but I don't know what you need me to do but I

[00:14:54] [SPEAKER_03]: just want to tell you right now that's that's out of my pay grade and that's

[00:14:59] [SPEAKER_03]: the kind of stuff that happens often with people of Frank's caliber yeah on

[00:15:03] [SPEAKER_03]: Animaniacs we had the gorgeous Bernadette Peters who did a character

[00:15:07] [SPEAKER_03]: called Rita and Frank was runt they were a cat and a dog who had a relationship

[00:15:11] [SPEAKER_03]: right and oh my god a freaking movie star she's gorgeous right definitely definitely

[00:15:16] [SPEAKER_03]: are you yeah and Bernadette oh my god when you're with her and you hear her

[00:15:21] [SPEAKER_03]: sing you understand the difference between a really talented Broadway singer star

[00:15:26] [SPEAKER_03]: yeah there is a difference when she sings she sings right in the middle of

[00:15:32] [SPEAKER_03]: the note and it's really difficult to go I don't know what it is that's why

[00:15:36] [SPEAKER_03]: she's a star right now I get it she's also down to earth stunningly beautiful her

[00:15:42] [SPEAKER_03]: skin is like alabaster but Frank Trest McNeil and Nancy Cartwright yeah and the

[00:15:48] [SPEAKER_03]: other actors start riffing you can see her just kind of she holds her hands in

[00:15:52] [SPEAKER_03]: front of her chest and says she's not comfortable with I just yeah I can't do

[00:15:56] [SPEAKER_03]: that yeah and it really shows you the depth of talent that people in that

[00:16:01] [SPEAKER_03]: league have in the voice department because people of the depth of talent

[00:16:05] [SPEAKER_03]: Mr. Borg nine and Bernadette yeah are blown away yeah seen it all they're not

[00:16:11] [SPEAKER_04]: used to seeing things like that especially when you have someone like

[00:16:13] [SPEAKER_04]: Welker or D Bradley Baker or people do yeah come on you know John Dimajou John

[00:16:18] [SPEAKER_03]: Dimajou yeah and so Billy West actors who have seen everything and they know

[00:16:23] [SPEAKER_03]: everybody right they won Oscars and Tonys and then they riff with Billy

[00:16:27] [SPEAKER_03]: West and they sort of sit back down and say okay I'm out of my league it's

[00:16:32] [SPEAKER_06]: almost a different animal it's almost really is unfairly put them in the same

[00:16:36] [SPEAKER_06]: thing yeah right it's okay you're a star baseball player now go play

[00:16:40] [SPEAKER_04]: professional basketball yeah Billy West is like talking to somebody who has

[00:16:45] [SPEAKER_03]: multiple personality disorder oh and you know what I love about Billy apart

[00:16:49] [SPEAKER_03]: from the fact he's one of my best friends used to come to all my kids

[00:16:52] [SPEAKER_03]: birthday parties and Mark Hamill did the same what I love about Billy is he

[00:16:56] [SPEAKER_03]: doesn't know how good he is and one of the things I'm really love about Bill

[00:17:02] [SPEAKER_03]: and I'm at he and Corey Burton in particular is another guy that's mind

[00:17:05] [SPEAKER_03]: blowing talented as you guys probably know and you've seen it at conventions

[00:17:09] [SPEAKER_03]: this this weekend included we have a number of folks who are on the autism spectrum

[00:17:13] [SPEAKER_03]: right for big fans and they love the convention experience because it's

[00:17:17] [SPEAKER_03]: utterly inclusive the number of times I meet parents bring their adult

[00:17:21] [SPEAKER_03]: child 30 year old young man or woman who clearly have challenges and those

[00:17:26] [SPEAKER_03]: men and women will have trouble for the rest of their lives buying a slur right

[00:17:29] [SPEAKER_03]: it's difficult but when they are here they are utterly included nobody looks at

[00:17:34] [SPEAKER_03]: them sideways they may be maybe Yakko or Pinky in my case that really connects

[00:17:40] [SPEAKER_03]: with them so they'll come up and off and mom and dad say this is my son Rob

[00:17:44] [SPEAKER_03]: and he's autistic I don't know if you've said I have a million times

[00:17:51] [SPEAKER_03]: I'm no problem they say thank you we just they're always so pleasant right they

[00:17:56] [SPEAKER_03]: stand back and then all of a sudden Rob comes up and he's maybe rocking back

[00:18:00] [SPEAKER_03]: and forth anxiety is crazy unfamiliar place to people yeah right and then

[00:18:05] [SPEAKER_03]: all of a sudden I say hey how you doing Rob Yakko's here and boom

[00:18:08] [SPEAKER_03]: everything stops and they just focus like a laser and all of a sudden all

[00:18:12] [SPEAKER_03]: that stuff goes away and they go I know everything I know every song you've

[00:18:15] [SPEAKER_03]: ever sung so did you know it's a great big universe and we're all really

[00:18:19] [SPEAKER_03]: puny and then he starts singing along and it could go on for yeah it's

[00:18:24] [SPEAKER_03]: beautiful it is beautiful and I look at I look at mom and dad and they're

[00:18:28] [SPEAKER_03]: both in tears right and it happens with all of us because pardon me for five

[00:18:32] [SPEAKER_03]: goddamn minutes nobody's looking at their child those parents are heroic

[00:18:40] [SPEAKER_03]: every day they're heroic so to see that at these events is what makes

[00:18:44] [SPEAKER_03]: this and what we're all lucky to be involved in so important and I got

[00:18:49] [SPEAKER_03]: it I got to pull this up I only want to show this to you obviously your fans

[00:18:52] [SPEAKER_03]: can't see it but this is what you're just talking about in terms of how

[00:18:55] [SPEAKER_03]: deeply people of all social economic levels people with all the money in

[00:19:02] [SPEAKER_03]: the world all the power in the world all the you name it in the world

[00:19:05] [SPEAKER_03]: everybody loves cartoons and you just never know who it is that's going

[00:19:10] [SPEAKER_03]: to cross your path and find out that wow who knew that so and so was a

[00:19:15] [SPEAKER_03]: big fan but a couple years ago I got to sing the national anthem I've done

[00:19:19] [SPEAKER_03]: it a couple times I sang it at Dodger Stadium and we'll let that go even

[00:19:25] [SPEAKER_03]: though we're trying oh thanks no I thank I sang the National Anthem at

[00:19:29] [SPEAKER_03]: Dodger Stadium and it was of course a huge thrill and so I'm standing

[00:19:34] [SPEAKER_03]: there after I got done the audience was so sweet you know this they said

[00:19:38] [SPEAKER_03]: nobody knows about pinkie Rafael and then the audience goes oh my god

[00:19:42] [SPEAKER_03]: how about that was pretty cool so I got done and I turned around I got this

[00:19:46] [SPEAKER_03]: tap on his shoulder and it was Justin Turner oh wow and the third

[00:19:49] [SPEAKER_03]: basement for the you know I'll start third baseman for the Dodgers

[00:19:53] [SPEAKER_03]: World Series winner all that stuff he says to me are you are you really

[00:19:56] [SPEAKER_03]: Rafael I said I sure am dude shredder get back here and taste cold

[00:20:00] [SPEAKER_03]: turtle steel and he started going oh my god dude and he opens up his

[00:20:03] [SPEAKER_03]: Dodger jersey and there's a TMNT t-shirt no way awesome so I signed a

[00:20:08] [SPEAKER_03]: picture for him it's got it right here in his hands and then I looked at

[00:20:11] [SPEAKER_03]: his wife who was a little tearful saying he has every

[00:20:14] [SPEAKER_03]: Ninja Turtle action figure at home on his desk and when he found out that

[00:20:20] [SPEAKER_03]: you were Rafael he came out of the dugout and I got to meet this guy

[00:20:23] [SPEAKER_03]: he's Rafael isn't that something that's 20 million bucks in here yeah right

[00:20:27] [SPEAKER_03]: about that it's about this guy's a Ninja Turtle you can afford all that

[00:20:31] [SPEAKER_04]: crazy yeah it's just amazing and now he again he gets to meet a

[00:20:35] [SPEAKER_03]: character that is a hero you know yeah yes crazy if you Google online one

[00:20:40] [SPEAKER_03]: of the year I think last year year before when they won the World

[00:20:42] [SPEAKER_03]: Series Justin had Adidas make him some Ninja Turtle cleats for his

[00:20:47] [SPEAKER_03]: World Series run it's amazing that's awesome that's so we talked about

[00:20:51] [SPEAKER_06]: like Mel Blank like what do you draw inspiration from oh man well now

[00:20:56] [SPEAKER_03]: it's from the fan base because now I know how much it means to people

[00:21:01] [SPEAKER_03]: and it's not like I didn't know before because I was working so

[00:21:04] [SPEAKER_03]: obviously people were watching I kept getting hired but now like the

[00:21:07] [SPEAKER_03]: autistic children or big stars right it is utterly transcendent and now

[00:21:11] [SPEAKER_03]: that's I get enormous inspiration artistically my heroes are the

[00:21:16] [SPEAKER_03]: Python's Michael Palin John Cleese Terry Jones Peter Sellers Peter Sellers

[00:21:22] [SPEAKER_03]: is like a God to me and every time I think I'm getting good at my job I

[00:21:27] [SPEAKER_03]: go back and watch some of the voice things that Peter Sellers did in

[00:21:30] [SPEAKER_03]: the fifth and it's just insane right I have to say that I work with

[00:21:34] [SPEAKER_03]: people from whom I draw inspiration you in a room Mark Hamill John

[00:21:39] [SPEAKER_03]: DeMaggio yeah Maurice Lamarche Tress McNeil Tara Strong Jen Hale Nancy

[00:21:45] [SPEAKER_03]: Cartwright it just doesn't stop E Bradley Baker Jeff Bennett Welker

[00:21:49] [SPEAKER_03]: Peter Cullen I work with my heroes right and Mark is one of the nice

[00:21:54] [SPEAKER_03]: by the way for those of you who not everybody gets a chance to meet

[00:21:57] [SPEAKER_03]: Luke Skywalker delightful utterly on I keep using unpretentious but

[00:22:02] [SPEAKER_03]: it's there to and I've been with Mark and signing signing events and

[00:22:06] [SPEAKER_03]: seeing how people lose their shit yeah right understandably so and

[00:22:11] [SPEAKER_03]: people say Mr. Hamill I know you hear this all the time and he said

[00:22:14] [SPEAKER_03]: yeah it's the first time I've heard it from you means a lot you took

[00:22:19] [SPEAKER_03]: the time and we all get this I think of people all the time this this

[00:22:22] [SPEAKER_03]: event is no difference I've had people who come up this week and who

[00:22:25] [SPEAKER_03]: flew to meet me yeah and there you know well thank you for taking

[00:22:30] [SPEAKER_03]: time to talk to me shame on me if I don't my God you decided to buy a

[00:22:34] [SPEAKER_03]: ticket maybe two a lot of LA rent a car right gases four and a half

[00:22:39] [SPEAKER_03]: bucks a gallon yeah you got to have a hotel minimum 200 bucks a night

[00:22:43] [SPEAKER_03]: for a place you're not that crazy about so if you got to stay here

[00:22:46] [SPEAKER_03]: for Friday Saturday and Sunday night you're talking about 600

[00:22:49] [SPEAKER_03]: bucks plus yeah room tax so by the time you get here you've

[00:22:53] [SPEAKER_03]: dropped a thousand bucks then you got to pay to get in here then

[00:22:56] [SPEAKER_03]: you find me then you stand in line maybe for 45 minutes because I

[00:23:01] [SPEAKER_03]: want to talk to everybody right and you are nothing but gracious

[00:23:04] [SPEAKER_03]: when you come up to me to tell me how much you love me pardon me

[00:23:07] [SPEAKER_03]: fuck me if I don't behave in a thoughtful kind way and mark is

[00:23:13] [SPEAKER_03]: the same way we're all the same way when I see people actors

[00:23:17] [SPEAKER_03]: sign stuff and they just yeah now I get it I get it because if

[00:23:22] [SPEAKER_03]: they've got a line out the door they have to be practical but

[00:23:24] [SPEAKER_03]: you can take 15 or 20 seconds to shake someone's hand and look at

[00:23:29] [SPEAKER_03]: them and say thank you and so if I see actors who behave that way

[00:23:32] [SPEAKER_03]: and and lunchtime is 12 and 1201 they still got 50 people in line

[00:23:36] [SPEAKER_03]: and they go all right it's lunchtime it's part of my contract

[00:23:39] [SPEAKER_03]: whatever you know what next time just don't come I get it if

[00:23:42] [SPEAKER_03]: it's not for you and you know you don't really want to deal

[00:23:45] [SPEAKER_03]: with that's fine but if you're going to take the money

[00:23:47] [SPEAKER_03]: right and be blown out first class and have everybody take

[00:23:50] [SPEAKER_03]: care of then give a little extra yeah or don't come nobody's

[00:23:53] [SPEAKER_03]: gonna hate you for not coming yeah you know but we all get how

[00:23:57] [SPEAKER_03]: lucky we are so when you see Mark Hamill deal with it that way

[00:23:59] [SPEAKER_03]: or God rest his soul Kevin Conroy you guys I was very close to

[00:24:04] [SPEAKER_04]: Kevin and that saddens me a lot because he was another one of

[00:24:06] [SPEAKER_04]: my bucket list guys totally never gonna happen and the

[00:24:09] [SPEAKER_03]: number of times I've seen he's powerful I'll see him stand up

[00:24:13] [SPEAKER_03]: line out the door and just turned up and take a microphone

[00:24:16] [SPEAKER_03]: and say I am I am I am bad man yeah and man people grown

[00:24:21] [SPEAKER_03]: men and women just laughing and crying at the same time

[00:24:24] [SPEAKER_03]: remark of it's a beautiful thing to watch more so because of how

[00:24:28] [SPEAKER_03]: decent Kevin was right and the stories are Legion you can Google

[00:24:32] [SPEAKER_03]: Kevin Conroy stories and people say oh my God I met Kevin or I

[00:24:36] [SPEAKER_03]: went through this or I went through that I taught my dad who is

[00:24:39] [SPEAKER_03]: dying of cancer over and over and over again and that's

[00:24:43] [SPEAKER_03]: those people almost oh my gosh my gosh that's amazing man

[00:24:46] [SPEAKER_03]: and they're my friends I got them on my phone all right

[00:24:50] [SPEAKER_04]: just show us just show us one time.

[00:24:52] [SPEAKER_03]: Listen man I know I've won the lottery right and then when I get

[00:24:55] [SPEAKER_03]: to share stories with nice guys like you and your audience it

[00:24:59] [SPEAKER_03]: never gets old people often say do you ever tired of singing

[00:25:01] [SPEAKER_03]: this the back goes old song and I said man problem is when

[00:25:04] [SPEAKER_03]: people stop asking yeah that's what you know right problem

[00:25:07] [SPEAKER_03]: and I know it won't last forever Hollywood for 43 years

[00:25:10] [SPEAKER_03]: and I know that this shit goes away right time for another

[00:25:13] [SPEAKER_03]: up to come up and do his gig and that's exactly the way it

[00:25:16] [SPEAKER_03]: should be right so for you guys to take the time and talk to me

[00:25:19] [SPEAKER_06]: as well you're part of our childhood thank you like you helped

[00:25:24] [SPEAKER_06]: mold us you know we are the what is it what is called latch key

[00:25:27] [SPEAKER_03]: kids definitely some latch key kids something and I hear that

[00:25:30] [SPEAKER_03]: a lot and I also hear from the parents were the latch key

[00:25:35] [SPEAKER_03]: parents maybe a single mom who just had two jobs to make

[00:25:38] [SPEAKER_03]: sure that you know Robin Mike had food and the rent was

[00:25:41] [SPEAKER_03]: paid and maybe dad skipped out or maybe it was a single

[00:25:43] [SPEAKER_03]: father whatever the parents will come with their grown

[00:25:46] [SPEAKER_03]: children and say I was the one who had to work 14 hours a day

[00:25:50] [SPEAKER_03]: but my kids got home headed to their homework and then they

[00:25:53] [SPEAKER_03]: could watch fill in the blank turtles you kept this company

[00:25:56] [SPEAKER_03]: right you guys took care of my babies and oh my God how can

[00:26:01] [SPEAKER_03]: I comprehend that right that's just and something you would

[00:26:04] [SPEAKER_03]: never never ever in a million years so all these

[00:26:08] [SPEAKER_03]: conventions have done is to drive home that this work

[00:26:12] [SPEAKER_03]: that I've gotten to do thank goodness and I've gotten great

[00:26:15] [SPEAKER_03]: privilege to learn that it's way more than just the job it's a

[00:26:19] [SPEAKER_03]: big deal yeah I'll be able to be able to thank everybody

[00:26:22] [SPEAKER_06]: as a fan we appreciate you having that kind of perspective

[00:26:26] [SPEAKER_06]: thank you buddy it means so much yeah much and I can tell

[00:26:29] [SPEAKER_03]: you categorically and virtually everyone you would

[00:26:32] [SPEAKER_03]: be mentioned and whom we discussed is that same I've

[00:26:35] [SPEAKER_03]: never seen Mark even in a public situation Mark and I are

[00:26:39] [SPEAKER_03]: down the street go in to grab a bite somewhere every person says

[00:26:44] [SPEAKER_03]: excuse me Mr. Hamlin every time yes oh well thank you it's like

[00:26:47] [SPEAKER_03]: the first time he's heard it I love that something about voice

[00:26:51] [SPEAKER_06]: actors the word the ego gets checked it's like tucked away

[00:26:54] [SPEAKER_03]: in their brain Mark you probably know Mark's a huge fanboy

[00:26:57] [SPEAKER_04]: and that's partially why I want to interview him so bad because

[00:27:00] [SPEAKER_03]: he's such a nerd to the bone yeah and proudly so right I've

[00:27:04] [SPEAKER_04]: heard he's more he's he's so much of a nerd that like

[00:27:07] [SPEAKER_04]: nerds get overwhelmed oh yeah because like he knows like he'll

[00:27:11] [SPEAKER_04]: tell you what what be list character from the snorks was

[00:27:14] [SPEAKER_04]: like this it's yeah he's that kind of nerd yeah I remember

[00:27:17] [SPEAKER_03]: years ago I mentioned to him because you know we're both old

[00:27:20] [SPEAKER_03]: TV nerds and marks little older than I and the same generation

[00:27:24] [SPEAKER_03]: and I told them I said God you know one of the old shows

[00:27:27] [SPEAKER_03]: that I used to love and I can't find anywhere I love to

[00:27:30] [SPEAKER_03]: watch it again as a show called my mother the car with

[00:27:32] [SPEAKER_03]: Jerry van Dyke was Dick Van Dyke's brother and a wonderful

[00:27:35] [SPEAKER_03]: actress who's passed away from the 40s named and southern was

[00:27:38] [SPEAKER_03]: the voice of this talking car this guy's mother died and came

[00:27:41] [SPEAKER_03]: back as a car and it was on for a season or two and I thought

[00:27:45] [SPEAKER_03]: it was just so silly I loved it Mark said oh Jesus hang on a

[00:27:48] [SPEAKER_03]: second so we're at his house and he goes upstairs he comes out

[00:27:50] [SPEAKER_03]: with a VHS tape of my mother the car and I still have it

[00:27:56] [SPEAKER_03]: where did you get the oh dude I love that I should tape

[00:27:59] [SPEAKER_03]: that years ago so yeah he is a bona fide pop culture

[00:28:03] [SPEAKER_03]: super geek yeah funny and and just really just but I think also

[00:28:08] [SPEAKER_03]: if I can say that the heroes that I've gotten to work with

[00:28:11] [SPEAKER_03]: who inspire me it's also because I've gotten to see how the

[00:28:14] [SPEAKER_03]: people like Mark like Steven Spielberg how they behave

[00:28:18] [SPEAKER_03]: people who have all the money they'll ever need they have

[00:28:21] [SPEAKER_03]: all the fame that gets them into any restaurant people who

[00:28:25] [SPEAKER_03]: give them free stuff they can afford whatever they want

[00:28:27] [SPEAKER_03]: and people want to give them free stuff right and they

[00:28:29] [SPEAKER_03]: and they could behave any way they want and they choose

[00:28:32] [SPEAKER_03]: to be decent they choose to take time whenever they can

[00:28:36] [SPEAKER_03]: two fantastic examples that have happened to me personally

[00:28:39] [SPEAKER_03]: during the Animaniacs launch part on the Warner Brothers lot

[00:28:43] [SPEAKER_03]: September of 1993 at the foot of the water tower

[00:28:46] [SPEAKER_03]: everybody was there musicians writers editors so Mr. Spielberg

[00:28:50] [SPEAKER_03]: comes down to say hi to everybody utterly delightful very

[00:28:53] [SPEAKER_03]: kind okay so I'm there with my son Ash who was eight

[00:28:57] [SPEAKER_03]: at time and Steven comes over to say all of us great

[00:29:00] [SPEAKER_03]: job my God we heard that yako how did you do that crazy

[00:29:06] [SPEAKER_03]: have you seen the piece it turned out great so making me feel

[00:29:09] [SPEAKER_03]: like a zillion bucks right because he knows what his

[00:29:13] [SPEAKER_03]: presence means to everyone right he knows that people

[00:29:16] [SPEAKER_03]: are getting a little nervous around him but so he goes out

[00:29:18] [SPEAKER_03]: of his way everybody comfort even takes it a step for

[00:29:21] [SPEAKER_03]: him standing with my son and he says is this your boy I

[00:29:24] [SPEAKER_03]: said this is my son Ash do you mind if we get a picture

[00:29:26] [SPEAKER_03]: I love that do you mind if not you want a picture do you

[00:29:30] [SPEAKER_03]: mind so it immediately takes the onus off me to have to ask

[00:29:34] [SPEAKER_03]: right and he knows everybody wants a picture right so

[00:29:38] [SPEAKER_03]: instead of going all right I got 20 minutes he says I am

[00:29:41] [SPEAKER_03]: here to be here to share in the joy of this of this

[00:29:44] [SPEAKER_03]: creation and if it takes me to two in the morning that's

[00:29:48] [SPEAKER_03]: what I'm here to do right and I will never forget that

[00:29:52] [SPEAKER_03]: conversely if I meet someone and I say to them and they say

[00:29:56] [SPEAKER_03]: you mind if we you know what dude I'm sorry I'm really tired

[00:29:59] [SPEAKER_03]: I just I got to go I'll forget that encounter but the person

[00:30:01] [SPEAKER_03]: who I blew off won't right and that is every bit as important

[00:30:06] [SPEAKER_03]: as as me being some hot shit actor right so Mr. Spielberg

[00:30:09] [SPEAKER_03]: does that for everybody in addition to writing checks

[00:30:12] [SPEAKER_03]: for millions of dollars right this man so I've told

[00:30:15] [SPEAKER_03]: that another time I was at LA studios working on a project

[00:30:18] [SPEAKER_03]: and I came out to Disney show anyway I walked out of the

[00:30:22] [SPEAKER_03]: studio and out from another studio comes Julie Andrews

[00:30:25] [SPEAKER_03]: who wow you know somebody who made me go crazy with

[00:30:28] [SPEAKER_03]: sound of music and Mary Poppins Mary Poppins and you

[00:30:31] [SPEAKER_03]: know Victor Victoria you name it yeah a bona fide brick and

[00:30:35] [SPEAKER_03]: movie star right and I passed her and she said hello

[00:30:38] [SPEAKER_03]: and I said hello and shit you gotta say I didn't need

[00:30:42] [SPEAKER_03]: to ask for an autograph I just have to tell her yeah

[00:30:51] [SPEAKER_03]: I'm just I hope I'm not taking too much of your time but I

[00:30:53] [SPEAKER_03]: just have to tell you how much sound of music meant to

[00:30:56] [SPEAKER_03]: my family and me were all singers every song she listened

[00:31:00] [SPEAKER_03]: to my spear and she said so what is your name I said

[00:31:04] [SPEAKER_03]: my name is Rob thank you Rob I'm Julie I said yes I know

[00:31:08] [SPEAKER_03]: how kind of you to take your time to tell me that

[00:31:11] [SPEAKER_03]: again we referenced this earlier how many times did

[00:31:14] [SPEAKER_03]: she heard right but it was like it was the first time she

[00:31:17] [SPEAKER_03]: took my hand with both of hers and said thank you so much Rob

[00:31:21] [SPEAKER_03]: I do hope you tell your siblings how much I appreciate

[00:31:24] [SPEAKER_03]: that you folks watch sound of music really was a seminal

[00:31:28] [SPEAKER_03]: moment in my career and that's how you behave right yeah

[00:31:31] [SPEAKER_03]: she could have said thank you and walked away or said

[00:31:34] [SPEAKER_03]: nothing and I already said hello dude you know but she

[00:31:37] [SPEAKER_03]: didn't and I reckon she does that with everybody yeah so

[00:31:41] [SPEAKER_03]: when you see how the best of the best how people whose fame

[00:31:45] [SPEAKER_03]: and talent is so far beyond my grasp I will never be at that

[00:31:50] [SPEAKER_03]: level doesn't matter that's how you behave if you generate

[00:31:53] [SPEAKER_03]: anything that resembles celebrity right and so yeah I've

[00:31:57] [SPEAKER_03]: had to hit the lottery with that's amazing yeah now we can

[00:32:00] [SPEAKER_04]: do this all day I know you guys gotta be home for

[00:32:03] [SPEAKER_04]: Christmas but not even that I got to get you back so
