[00:02:00] [SPEAKER_06]: It looks like a full setup.
[00:02:03] [SPEAKER_06]: Oh, it is.
[00:02:04] [SPEAKER_06]: You guys are like the back...
[00:02:05] [SPEAKER_06]: Okay, sorry.
[00:02:08] [SPEAKER_06]: How you doing?
[00:02:10] [SPEAKER_06]: I'm doing great, man.
[00:02:12] [SPEAKER_06]: It's been such a morning.
[00:02:14] [SPEAKER_06]: Raise your hand if we met this morning.
[00:02:16] [SPEAKER_06]: Yeah, like we all had like...
[00:02:19] [SPEAKER_06]: We vibed.
[00:02:20] [SPEAKER_06]: Right?
[00:02:21] [SPEAKER_06]: I mean it was like a legit...
[00:02:23] [SPEAKER_06]: I'm like, I need a rest.
[00:02:24] [SPEAKER_06]: I'm like, I met so many people and talked about them.
[00:02:26] [SPEAKER_06]: I'm back home.
[00:02:27] [SPEAKER_06]: I mean, my mother was 30 years in Idaho.
[00:02:29] [SPEAKER_06]: Oh, wow.
[00:02:34] [SPEAKER_06]: She passed in 2016,
[00:02:36] [SPEAKER_06]: but I'll send that to her.
[00:02:39] [SPEAKER_06]: That goodwill.
[00:02:40] [SPEAKER_06]: Yeah, Corder Lane and Hayden.
[00:02:42] [SPEAKER_06]: I got married in Hayden, Idaho.
[00:02:44] [SPEAKER_06]: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
[00:02:46] [SPEAKER_06]: Local.
[00:02:46] [SPEAKER_06]: You get a lot of history here.
[00:02:47] [SPEAKER_06]: Yeah, I gave a commencement address at University of Idaho.
[00:02:50] Wow.
[00:02:51] [SPEAKER_06]: It was awesome.
[00:02:53] [SPEAKER_09]: Where's our university alum at?
[00:02:56] [SPEAKER_06]: What is it?
[00:02:58] [SPEAKER_06]: The Gauchos or what's the mascot?
[00:03:01] Vandals.
[00:03:01] [SPEAKER_06]: The Vandals.
[00:03:03] [SPEAKER_06]: Yes.
[00:03:04] [SPEAKER_06]: That's kind of dope.
[00:03:05] [SPEAKER_06]: Yes, in Idaho, the aptly named Vandals.
[00:03:08] [SPEAKER_06]: I see.
[00:03:09] [SPEAKER_09]: Wonderful.
[00:03:11] [SPEAKER_09]: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
[00:03:12] [SPEAKER_09]: So before we get into like everything else that we're going to go on here,
[00:03:15] [SPEAKER_09]: we have a segment on our show called Growing Up Geeky.
[00:03:18] [SPEAKER_09]: Oh yeah, no.
[00:03:19] [SPEAKER_09]: Sorry, go ahead.
[00:03:20] [SPEAKER_09]: Are you Star Wars fan?
[00:03:21] [SPEAKER_06]: If you said, Sean, you have to eliminate the Vandals.
[00:03:25] [SPEAKER_06]: If you had to eliminate either Lord of the Rings, all Lord of the Rings,
[00:03:28] [SPEAKER_06]: or Star Wars from the world, which would you choose?
[00:03:30] [SPEAKER_06]: I'd have to think about it.
[00:03:33] [SPEAKER_09]: Did you?
[00:03:33] [SPEAKER_09]: So obviously you watched The Mandalorian, right?
[00:03:35] [SPEAKER_09]: Yeah.
[00:03:36] [SPEAKER_09]: So you remember the scene in Mandalorian about the travel business,
[00:03:41] [SPEAKER_09]: yellow travel business?
[00:03:41] [SPEAKER_09]: Yeah, yeah, of course.
[00:03:42] [SPEAKER_09]: Those are yellow travel business.
[00:03:43] [SPEAKER_10]: That's the recipe and those are the, yeah, have a yellow travel business.
[00:03:47] [SPEAKER_06]: It's known as lambas bread.
[00:03:49] [SPEAKER_06]: Hopefully, hope George Lucas gives appropriate credit for the...
[00:03:55] [SPEAKER_06]: Yeah, appropriating the lambas bread.
[00:03:59] [SPEAKER_06]: We called it lambas bread.
[00:04:01] [SPEAKER_06]: And the dialect coach, coaches were there to make sure that we sounded kind of authentic or whatever.
[00:04:09] [SPEAKER_06]: And he would say things like, elongate the vowels.
[00:04:13] [SPEAKER_06]: Like, okay.
[00:04:14] [SPEAKER_06]: I'm going to say lambas bread.
[00:04:14] [SPEAKER_06]: He goes a little bit longer.
[00:04:16] [SPEAKER_06]: The lambas bread.
[00:04:18] [SPEAKER_06]: The lambas bread.
[00:04:20] [SPEAKER_06]: And finally, he was hearing something that was sounding American instead of whisk country.
[00:04:27] [SPEAKER_06]: And every night when we were on location, at nighttime after filming,
[00:04:32] [SPEAKER_06]: we'd go to the hotel up in the second floor and they put up big screen
[00:04:35] [SPEAKER_06]: and we would watch the previous day's work, the dailies from the previous day.
[00:04:40] [SPEAKER_06]: And it was like watching the movie.
[00:04:42] [SPEAKER_06]: For three hours we'd watch 15 takes of potatoes or whatever it is.
[00:04:47] [SPEAKER_06]: And I come on the screen in this perfect hero shot.
[00:04:54] [SPEAKER_06]: Sam's full face.
[00:04:57] [SPEAKER_06]: Lambas bread.
[00:04:59] [SPEAKER_06]: Lambas bread.
[00:05:00] [SPEAKER_06]: And Elijah, everybody just fell on the floor.
[00:05:02] [SPEAKER_06]: And I'm like, we said elongate the vowels, man.
[00:05:04] [SPEAKER_06]: I don't know.
[00:05:06] [SPEAKER_06]: Anyhow, so Star Wars cookies are fine.
[00:05:10] [SPEAKER_09]: So what I was going to say is, what did you geek out on when you grew up?
[00:05:14] [SPEAKER_06]: Well, Star Wars.
[00:05:16] [SPEAKER_06]: Star Wars was, I remember seeing the making of.
[00:05:24] [SPEAKER_06]: The first making of thing was Lucas.
[00:05:27] [SPEAKER_06]: And it was those pictures of the Death Star with the camera,
[00:05:31] [SPEAKER_06]: the way they built those miniatures and the way they built the TIE fighters and stuff
[00:05:37] [SPEAKER_06]: and with the Land Cruiser.
[00:05:40] [SPEAKER_06]: And so you could, you know, it's behind the scenes.
[00:05:42] [SPEAKER_06]: You're looking at the crew and the lighting guy and the sound guy.
[00:05:44] [SPEAKER_06]: And so all of a sudden it was like, I want to do that.
[00:05:48] [SPEAKER_06]: I want to do that.
[00:05:49] [SPEAKER_06]: And we would get, my dad had a Super 8 camera.
[00:05:52] [SPEAKER_06]: And we, I wrote a movie called, oh my God, what was it called?
[00:06:00] [SPEAKER_06]: Oh no.
[00:06:01] [SPEAKER_06]: I had it.
[00:06:02] [SPEAKER_06]: It was called, oh, what was my little movie called?
[00:06:07] [SPEAKER_06]: But anyhow, so my little brother, he was the star of it.
[00:06:11] [SPEAKER_06]: He was the star of it.
[00:06:12] [SPEAKER_06]: And we got dry ice and we put the dry ice like in the closet
[00:06:19] [SPEAKER_06]: and we filmed him and we filmed the closet door opening.
[00:06:22] [SPEAKER_06]: We just made it real.
[00:06:23] [SPEAKER_06]: We made it look real.
[00:06:24] [SPEAKER_06]: Our nanny was incredibly talented and she built like the cockpit of a fighter ship.
[00:06:31] [SPEAKER_06]: And so we, and then we had all the Star Wars toys.
[00:06:35] [SPEAKER_06]: So we built a background backdrop with lights, you know, poking holes in it
[00:06:40] [SPEAKER_06]: so it looked like a star field.
[00:06:41] [SPEAKER_06]: And we hung them up and you get the Super 8 camera.
[00:06:45] [SPEAKER_06]: It cost like money to buy the film.
[00:06:48] [SPEAKER_06]: So like we had to do chores or we had whatever to,
[00:06:51] [SPEAKER_06]: so you put the little thing in there and it's running.
[00:06:55] [SPEAKER_06]: And then we do the, put my brother in a helmet and we tilt the camera
[00:06:59] [SPEAKER_06]: and he goes like this and you edit it.
[00:07:02] [SPEAKER_06]: You like, the actual film is printed out and you can hold it up and look at it.
[00:07:05] [SPEAKER_06]: And you cut it and literally put it on the thing and tape it together.
[00:07:10] [SPEAKER_06]: That's how you make an edit, right?
[00:07:12] [SPEAKER_06]: And then you can, and then you could run it through the little,
[00:07:15] [SPEAKER_06]: the little thing, right?
[00:07:16] [SPEAKER_06]: And we, I made, it was good.
[00:07:21] It was good.
[00:07:22] [SPEAKER_06]: The only thing was I didn't know how to put music to it.
[00:07:25] [SPEAKER_06]: Music would have made it like, you know, publishable.
[00:07:28] [SPEAKER_06]: So, but now you could do it like right here by the time we're finished with this talk,
[00:07:31] [SPEAKER_06]: you could have made a little movie about this talk and have it on YouTube
[00:07:33] [SPEAKER_06]: and it'll have color, you know, special effects and everything.
[00:07:36] [SPEAKER_06]: But, but though, so when I got to the set of Lord of the Rings
[00:07:39] [SPEAKER_06]: and we walked into this, back this, this warehouse
[00:07:44] [SPEAKER_06]: and they saw Minas Tirith, right?
[00:07:47] [SPEAKER_06]: And it's six, there's a ladder and you can climb up on the ladder
[00:07:52] [SPEAKER_06]: like three stories tall and anywhere you would look
[00:07:56] [SPEAKER_06]: on this massive toy basically, it was basically a miniature.
[00:08:00] [SPEAKER_06]: They call them bigatures.
[00:08:00] [SPEAKER_06]: There's a miniature and you could look at it and be like,
[00:08:03] [SPEAKER_06]: oh that's like a little pulley and bucket system
[00:08:06] [SPEAKER_06]: and this is like a little rail where the dwarves would like push their things.
[00:08:11] [SPEAKER_06]: Or it was just so cool and it was like Star Wars.
[00:08:18] [SPEAKER_06]: It was like what I saw George Lucas doing.
[00:08:20] [SPEAKER_06]: It was the same only now there was, you know, so yeah.
[00:08:24] [SPEAKER_09]: Dwarves and...
[00:08:25] [SPEAKER_06]: Yeah, and elves and goblins and orcs and Uruk-hai and you know.
[00:08:29] [SPEAKER_10]: What were the other ones?
[00:08:32] [SPEAKER_10]: There were four of them in the movie.
[00:08:35] [SPEAKER_10]: Hobbits, that's right, there were some hobbits.
[00:08:38] [SPEAKER_09]: The halflings.
[00:08:45] [SPEAKER_09]: Jackson the Little Hobbitess.
[00:08:50] [SPEAKER_09]: Looked like he just had PTSD when I did that.
[00:08:52] [SPEAKER_06]: Help me, help me.
[00:08:58] [SPEAKER_06]: There's something about foursomes, the turtles, the ninja turtles.
[00:09:03] [SPEAKER_06]: Yeah, right, Raph.
[00:09:04] [SPEAKER_06]: Come on, stop talking and start fighting.
[00:09:07] [SPEAKER_06]: Thank you very much everybody.
[00:09:09] [SPEAKER_06]: Good night.
[00:09:10] [SPEAKER_06]: But the beetles, like there's something about foursomes that are cool.
[00:09:14] [SPEAKER_06]: We really leaned into that and it was, yeah.
[00:09:17] [SPEAKER_06]: And apparently it worked.
[00:09:18] [SPEAKER_06]: You've been talking about it for 15 years?
[00:09:21] [SPEAKER_10]: I talk about it in my sleep too.
[00:09:25] [SPEAKER_10]: Hobbits, hobbitsess.
[00:09:27] [SPEAKER_06]: Hobbitsess.
[00:09:28] [SPEAKER_06]: We do these shows, we do these conventions together.
[00:09:31] [SPEAKER_06]: We're going to be in Cleveland.
[00:09:32] [SPEAKER_06]: Sorry, these are good.
[00:09:34] [SPEAKER_06]: Thank you.
[00:09:36] [SPEAKER_06]: So anyway, we're going to be in Cleveland.
[00:09:38] [SPEAKER_06]: Woo!
[00:09:40] [SPEAKER_06]: And Elijah and Dom are foodies.
[00:09:44] [SPEAKER_06]: So they'll find some, you know, three Michelin's, three, you know,
[00:09:49] [SPEAKER_06]: And we'll go there on the Friday night of the convention and I think we spent like $5,000 on a dinner.
[00:09:56] [SPEAKER_10]: Oh my gosh.
[00:09:57] [SPEAKER_06]: And the dinner's so good you want, you just, you take pictures of it.
[00:10:00] [SPEAKER_06]: And the person will come out and they'll put the plate down.
[00:10:02] [SPEAKER_06]: And we do this all over the country and in other countries.
[00:10:05] [SPEAKER_06]: And they start describing the food.
[00:10:08] [SPEAKER_06]: And the descriptions of the food are like better than the food.
[00:10:12] [SPEAKER_06]: They're like, it's going to be 25 courses.
[00:10:15] [SPEAKER_06]: Oh my gosh.
[00:10:15] [SPEAKER_06]: But it's not a course like we eat it, like, you know, potatoes and whatever.
[00:10:19] [SPEAKER_06]: It's they bring a plate with a little thing and they describe it.
[00:10:22] [SPEAKER_06]: This was pulled from something in the region of this and blah, blah, blah,
[00:10:26] [SPEAKER_06]: and infused with the things and a reduction of that and the glaze of this and whatever.
[00:10:30] [SPEAKER_06]: And you're like, they're just using words that don't sound like they belong with food.
[00:10:35] [SPEAKER_06]: But that's we, and we share those experiences together and they're memorable.
[00:10:40] [SPEAKER_06]: You start remembering, you know, when people say, do you remember me?
[00:10:44] [SPEAKER_06]: I met you at a convention in 2007.
[00:10:48] [SPEAKER_06]: I'm like, all right.
[00:10:50] [SPEAKER_06]: You know, I'm going to interact with 800 people here today and like another.
[00:10:54] [SPEAKER_06]: So but you do.
[00:10:55] [SPEAKER_06]: You start to remember like something specific.
[00:10:58] [SPEAKER_06]: State Capitol.
[00:10:59] [SPEAKER_06]: I saw the state capitol last night from my hotel was like framed right in the window.
[00:11:04] [SPEAKER_06]: And there's a little on the patio.
[00:11:06] [SPEAKER_06]: They had like a patio and it was like a red chair and a red table.
[00:11:09] [SPEAKER_06]: It was beautiful.
[00:11:10] [SPEAKER_06]: And I'm on the phone and watching an inch of snow come up on the table.
[00:11:16] [SPEAKER_06]: And it's like, oh my God, this is like a Christmas card.
[00:11:20] [SPEAKER_06]: You know, so when they say what did you have good time in Boise?
[00:11:22] [SPEAKER_06]: I'll start going this morning.
[00:11:24] [SPEAKER_06]: I got moxie.
[00:11:26] Right.
[00:11:27] [SPEAKER_06]: Right.
[00:11:28] [SPEAKER_06]: Yeah.
[00:11:29] [SPEAKER_06]: Moxie.
[00:11:29] [SPEAKER_06]: Yeah.
[00:11:29] [SPEAKER_06]: We were driving by.
[00:11:30] [SPEAKER_06]: I'm like, that looks like they care about their coffee.
[00:11:34] [SPEAKER_06]: So stop.
[00:11:34] [SPEAKER_06]: And he's like, oh, you're like, who does that?
[00:11:38] [SPEAKER_06]: Is it the Jesuits or something like?
[00:11:39] [SPEAKER_06]: Know that when in Rome, you know, find something specific to the locale where you are.
[00:11:44] [SPEAKER_06]: And then you can like bond with people over that.
[00:11:46] [SPEAKER_06]: And I had this coffee and it was good coffee.
[00:11:49] [SPEAKER_06]: It was serious.
[00:11:50] [SPEAKER_06]: But apparently tomorrow I'm going to go to Jack.
[00:11:55] [SPEAKER_06]: What?
[00:11:57] [SPEAKER_06]: There's another one.
[00:11:59] [SPEAKER_06]: Another coffee story.
[00:12:00] [SPEAKER_06]: What?
[00:12:03] [SPEAKER_06]: Dutch Bros.
[00:12:04] [SPEAKER_06]: Dutch Bros.
[00:12:05] [SPEAKER_06]: Whoa.
[00:12:07] [SPEAKER_06]: Raise your hand for Moxie.
[00:12:09] [SPEAKER_06]: Raise your hand for Dutch Bros.
[00:12:13] [SPEAKER_09]: You can get any flavor of anything at Dutch Bros.
[00:12:15] [SPEAKER_09]: If you're if it comes to mind.
[00:12:17] [SPEAKER_09]: Yeah.
[00:12:18] [SPEAKER_09]: And you can get a sugar free.
[00:12:27] [SPEAKER_09]: My golden eagle.
[00:12:28] [SPEAKER_09]: That's one of the drinks that at that's gross.
[00:12:31] [SPEAKER_06]: Oh, I thought it was another coffee.
[00:12:32] [SPEAKER_06]: OK.
[00:12:34] [SPEAKER_06]: So I was talking to my booker who puts me in these things.
[00:12:36] [SPEAKER_06]: And last night and asking about her daughter, how's your daughter doing?
[00:12:40] [SPEAKER_06]: You know, you get it's like family eventually.
[00:12:42] [SPEAKER_06]: And she was saying, you know, she worked in a coffee house and she didn't like it after a while because the people who came in in the morning were grumpy before their coffee.
[00:12:49] [SPEAKER_06]: And I'm like, that's like being irritated before a surgery.
[00:12:54] [SPEAKER_06]: You want to be they're about to help you should be nice to them.
[00:12:58] [SPEAKER_06]: Right.
[00:13:00] [SPEAKER_06]: So so but anyway, these people at Moxie, they were just awesome.
[00:13:03] [SPEAKER_06]: All right.
[00:13:04] [SPEAKER_06]: Go on more questions.
[00:13:04] [SPEAKER_06]: Go on.
[00:13:05] [SPEAKER_10]: So we were going to say you've answered about like five questions.
[00:13:13] [SPEAKER_06]: No, but it's like we want to increase the frequency.
[00:13:17] [SPEAKER_09]: So so of all the roles that you've done.
[00:13:20] [SPEAKER_09]: What was the one that made you go?
[00:13:22] [SPEAKER_09]: I made it.
[00:13:22] [SPEAKER_09]: I'm in Hollywood.
[00:13:30] [SPEAKER_06]: Well, after the Goonies, I was 12.
[00:13:36] [SPEAKER_06]: I was in, I guess, seventh grade, the beginning of seventh grade.
[00:13:41] [SPEAKER_06]: And at the end of the seventh grade year, they could have those elections for a student body president and whatever.
[00:13:51] [SPEAKER_06]: And I was at St. Paul, the Apostle Catholic School.
[00:13:53] [SPEAKER_06]: And I decided I wanted to run for president as you do.
[00:13:58] [SPEAKER_06]: And why wouldn't I?
[00:13:59] [SPEAKER_06]: Right. I just started like a hundred million dollar movie.
[00:14:01] [SPEAKER_06]: There's like I remember my mom or somebody brought in one of those like Navy bags, those canvas bags that you get that you see like, you know, with a short leave and they've got their bag like that and poured fan mail.
[00:14:17] [SPEAKER_02]: Oh, wow.
[00:14:18] [SPEAKER_06]: With fan mail and like a mountain of fan mail at 12 years old.
[00:14:21] [SPEAKER_06]: And you're like, all right, let me let me see it.
[00:14:24] [SPEAKER_06]: And you open it up and it's like, hi, my name is Darlene.
[00:14:26] [SPEAKER_06]: I'm from Iowa.
[00:14:26] [SPEAKER_06]: I just want to say I thought you're really cute in this movie.
[00:14:30] [SPEAKER_06]: And my mom, my dad said I wasn't allowed to see it and he doesn't know I'm writing you this letter.
[00:14:35] [SPEAKER_06]: And I'm like, OK, so I get a piece of paper and I'm like, dear Darlene, thank you so much for writing me.
[00:14:45] [SPEAKER_06]: I'm 12.
[00:14:46] [SPEAKER_06]: I don't know what to say.
[00:14:48] [SPEAKER_06]: So and I'm thinking about it.
[00:14:49] [SPEAKER_06]: And it's like after three minutes trying to think what to write on this letter.
[00:14:53] [SPEAKER_06]: And I look over and there's this mountain.
[00:14:55] [SPEAKER_06]: I'm like, I'm not going to do this.
[00:14:59] [SPEAKER_06]: But anyway, so I was famous.
[00:15:01] [SPEAKER_06]: But so I go and I run for the office and it's three people, me and Bobby Conca and Doug Cooper.
[00:15:09] [SPEAKER_06]: And and I'm sitting in my seat and Mrs. Morgan's class, a history class.
[00:15:14] [SPEAKER_06]: She was strict.
[00:15:15] [SPEAKER_06]: I was kind of I don't know.
[00:15:17] [SPEAKER_06]: I wasn't diagnosed ADD, but I was like a very hyper kid.
[00:15:20] [SPEAKER_06]: She was a you're like butter on a hot griddle.
[00:15:22] [SPEAKER_06]: Sit down.
[00:15:25] [SPEAKER_06]: So I sat down and and then Mrs. Sister Stella comes over the speakerphone.
[00:15:33] [SPEAKER_06]: She could be severe and not bad like when my mom was a kid where they wrap your knuckles and stuff like that.
[00:15:38] [SPEAKER_06]: But just she talks and has that look in her eye and you're like, oh, my God, I'm so mad at me.
[00:15:42] [SPEAKER_06]: And she's like, all right. Well, we have a runoff.
[00:15:45] [SPEAKER_06]: I didn't even know what the heck a runoff was.
[00:15:47] [SPEAKER_06]: They don't tell you these things.
[00:15:49] [SPEAKER_06]: So there's a runoff and we're going to have that election.
[00:15:52] [SPEAKER_06]: The runoff will be for president.
[00:15:53] [SPEAKER_06]: It'll be Doug Cooper and Bobby Conca.
[00:15:56] [SPEAKER_06]: And now I'm starting to put together what a runoff is.
[00:16:00] [SPEAKER_06]: It means I didn't get it.
[00:16:03] [SPEAKER_06]: So it wasn't then.
[00:16:07] [SPEAKER_06]: So so then because to me, that question sort of suggests a sense of confidence that there will be more work.
[00:16:16] [SPEAKER_06]: And so on Rudy, I remember we were filming the scenes in Whiting, Illinois, the steel mill scenes.
[00:16:26] [SPEAKER_06]: We'd film in this like grisly steel mill dangerous environment and then go to this really fancy hotel.
[00:16:32] [SPEAKER_06]: You like bathrobes and salts and things like that.
[00:16:37] [SPEAKER_06]: And you're like, OK, what time's my call?
[00:16:39] [SPEAKER_06]: And then you get to work as a.
[00:16:42] [SPEAKER_06]: So I remember standing up.
[00:16:45] [SPEAKER_06]: So I was married. I got married very young.
[00:16:47] [SPEAKER_06]: I was married at 21.
[00:16:48] [SPEAKER_06]: And my wife, Christine, from Indiana, we were on like, I don't know, the 32nd floor of the Omni Ambassador or something fancy like that.
[00:16:57] [SPEAKER_06]: And I remember looking out the window and I said, and I'm not I'm not still very much.
[00:17:04] [SPEAKER_06]: But I was like in a moment of reflection or something.
[00:17:08] [SPEAKER_06]: And I can I wasn't looking at her, but I can only imagine that she was marveling at what was ever happening with this person.
[00:17:16] [SPEAKER_06]: And I said, what if this is it?
[00:17:20] [SPEAKER_06]: What if this is the best?
[00:17:22] [SPEAKER_06]: Twenty one.
[00:17:24] [SPEAKER_06]: Wow. And she goes, because I'm starring Sean Astin, Rudy, starring Sean Astin playing Rudy in a studio movie.
[00:17:32] [SPEAKER_06]: Fifteen million dollar movies, not that big, but it's for your career.
[00:17:36] [SPEAKER_06]: It's that's it, man. This is your shot.
[00:17:38] [SPEAKER_06]: And and I just said, what if this is good as it gets?
[00:17:41] [SPEAKER_06]: Was it? And she said, you're young.
[00:17:44] [SPEAKER_06]: What are you saying?
[00:17:46] [SPEAKER_06]: And so that wasn't it.
[00:17:50] [SPEAKER_06]: I think when Lord of the Rings.
[00:17:55] [SPEAKER_06]: When it was nominated for 13 Oscars each year, I was going to say all all the awards.
[00:18:01] [SPEAKER_06]: All the awards are nominated for all of the awards, but it didn't win Best Picture the first or second time.
[00:18:05] [SPEAKER_06]: The third one, you kind of like everyone's like they're going to save it for the third one.
[00:18:08] [SPEAKER_06]: They're going to win the third one.
[00:18:09] [SPEAKER_06]: And when you it was then the Kodak Theater, Kodak Film, film kids, if you don't know what film is.
[00:18:19] [SPEAKER_06]: It's like my theme for the day. But the Kodak Theater now it's the Dolby Theater or maybe even something else.
[00:18:25] [SPEAKER_06]: But they built this. It was like a seven hundred million dollar complex right on Hollywood because Hollywood, Hollywood, city of Hollywood is a pit.
[00:18:33] [SPEAKER_06]: It's there's just like vagrants and the buildings are run down and it's just not like a.
[00:18:39] [SPEAKER_06]: And they're layer pockets of things, but and I think there's a little bit of money kind of coming back into it now and a little bit of care coming into the space.
[00:18:46] [SPEAKER_06]: But it was kind of like a dumping ground for a while and film went to Canada and Georgia and all over the world.
[00:18:52] [SPEAKER_06]: It was like it was losing its place.
[00:18:55] [SPEAKER_06]: But Hollywood, the idea, you know, Tinseltown celebrity, you know, whatever, premieres and stars.
[00:19:02] [SPEAKER_06]: And so Kodak then they designed it to look like like an Egyptian or pharaonic kind of thing where there are huge towers and a bridge.
[00:19:13] [SPEAKER_06]: And it framed where the Hollywood sign on the mountain behind it.
[00:19:17] [SPEAKER_06]: And it just was like it felt like an imposing, enduring structure.
[00:19:24] [SPEAKER_06]: This building is going to last. It feels permanent. It's not permanent.
[00:19:28] [SPEAKER_06]: I don't know if you guys know the poem Ozymandias, but he just brought you a Dutch Bros.
[00:19:49] [SPEAKER_09]: Dave is coming in clutch with the Dutch Bros out of nowhere.
[00:19:53] [SPEAKER_06]: But you guys know who Dave is? Take a good look at Dave Davis.
[00:19:57] [SPEAKER_09]: This is Dave's show. He is the guy responsible for everything you're seeing.
[00:20:02] [SPEAKER_06]: He created this show when you when you talk about because in years to come, you'll get more.
[00:20:09] [SPEAKER_06]: You'll get bigger stars. You get actual stars.
[00:20:12] [SPEAKER_06]: But but you get these shows are built based on the commitment of the fans.
[00:20:20] [SPEAKER_06]: You know, maybe not if you're in some big city where they can just kind of like plug and play corporate kind of thing.
[00:20:26] [SPEAKER_06]: But this isn't corporate. This is 2004, 2005 style show.
[00:20:31] [SPEAKER_06]: So it's really important that you know that he is a powerful member of this community.
[00:20:36] [SPEAKER_06]: Every decision he makes about how he does this show is designed to reinforce Boise Boise.
[00:20:45] [SPEAKER_06]: And somebody tried to correct me. I'm like, yeah, Boise goes, oh, no, they like Boise.
[00:20:48] [SPEAKER_06]: I'm like, no, they don't. So so what they don't like is all the Californians coming in.
[00:20:57] [SPEAKER_06]: But anyhow, California and from here, though, no, no, no.
[00:21:00] [SPEAKER_06]: But did you hear half five years ago when I said that there would have been a cheer.
[00:21:05] [SPEAKER_06]: Now half of these people from California. So they imported me from Sacramento to interview you.
[00:21:12] [SPEAKER_06]: So I mean, so they yeah, Sacramento is awesome.
[00:21:16] [SPEAKER_06]: There's Sacramento boys here kind of similar.
[00:21:18] [SPEAKER_09]: They're both capital, capital, smaller, smaller towns than some of the bigger ones.
[00:21:22] [SPEAKER_06]: Yeah, a little rough if you ask me.
[00:21:23] [SPEAKER_06]: But anyway, so so the Dolby Theater in Tulsa, I'm from Tulsa, Oklahoma.
[00:21:30] [SPEAKER_10]: It's OK. Oh, no, I had to drive through Kansas to get here.
[00:21:36] [SPEAKER_06]: So Juneteenth, Tulsa. Yeah, Juneteenth. Yeah.
[00:21:39] [SPEAKER_06]: That's I'm in a union and we've been we negotiate all these contracts and we've been negotiating that holiday to be in these contracts.
[00:21:47] [SPEAKER_06]: And it's like so anyway, I've been to Tulsa.
[00:21:49] [SPEAKER_06]: They make good steak there. Don't they? He's not wrong.
[00:21:53] [SPEAKER_06]: I'm not wrong. Tell my wife and kids that.
[00:21:58] [SPEAKER_06]: So I want to finish this story about the Kodak theater.
[00:22:00] [SPEAKER_06]: So the pillars, they have these giant pillars kind of look like the mines of Moria.
[00:22:04] [SPEAKER_06]: You know, when there's the pillars in the mines of Moria, it kind of looks like that.
[00:22:07] [SPEAKER_06]: But but Egyptian or whatever.
[00:22:10] [SPEAKER_06]: And and on the pillars, they put the names of all of the best picture winners chronologically 1950, you know, East of Eden or whatever it is.
[00:22:19] [SPEAKER_06]: You know, Casablanca, Lawrence of Arabia, whatever.
[00:22:23] [SPEAKER_06]: And and that is, you know, even Steven Spielberg, who had made some of the best movies ever in the history of mankind, hadn't won.
[00:22:30] [SPEAKER_06]: Didn't have his he wasn't a best picture winner until Schindler's List.
[00:22:33] [SPEAKER_06]: I think that's the first one for anyone. I think that was his first one.
[00:22:36] [SPEAKER_06]: And he was right. Oh, man, the cinephile over here.
[00:22:39] [SPEAKER_06]: They ought to give you a show. You could do it.
[00:22:43] [SPEAKER_09]: Well, nerds, this was the time that my computer decided that its memory was full.
[00:22:47] [SPEAKER_09]: So we lost out on a good amount of this interview, probably about a good five minutes of it.
[00:22:51] [SPEAKER_09]: So we do not get the conclusion of this story.
[00:22:53] [SPEAKER_09]: But I do ask him about mesh shirts in Hawaii and he starts to tell us a story about doing a marathon in said beautiful place.
[00:23:00] [SPEAKER_09]: So we pick up from there.
[00:23:03] [SPEAKER_06]: I didn't know this or I did know this.
[00:23:05] [SPEAKER_06]: You have an ankle monitor.
[00:23:08] [SPEAKER_06]: They want to know where people are in the track and they check your weight and stuff like people die doing it.
[00:23:14] [SPEAKER_06]: It's a two and it's a two point two point four mile swim.
[00:23:19] [SPEAKER_06]: If you've ever swum to something like three hundred laps in the pool, something like that.
[00:23:26] [SPEAKER_06]: Check with Google.
[00:23:27] [SPEAKER_06]: And then and then it's a hundred and twelve mile bike ride in like over 100 degree weather with wind coming at you in 30 miles an hour in every direction.
[00:23:35] [SPEAKER_06]: And then it's a twenty six point two mile run.
[00:23:37] [SPEAKER_06]: I did it in 15 hours and 30 minutes and 30 seconds.
[00:23:41] [SPEAKER_06]: And thank you very much.
[00:23:45] [SPEAKER_06]: So and when I did a radio show, you know, you go there race week is amazing experience when people are you know, you're about to have this like transcendent experience.
[00:23:54] [SPEAKER_06]: And it was people native native Polynesians who had their show.
[00:24:00] [SPEAKER_06]: And because I wasn't doing like press, I'm like, I need to focus on what I'm doing.
[00:24:03] [SPEAKER_06]: And they're like, yeah, but there's so I went and did this show with this one thing.
[00:24:09] [SPEAKER_06]: And and I told them the story of the first day we filmed Lord of the Rings, the first shot at the Stone Street Studios.
[00:24:23] [SPEAKER_06]: And Tim didn't stay with the film for very long.
[00:24:25] [SPEAKER_06]: He was one of the producers.
[00:24:26] [SPEAKER_06]: He gathered the whole cast and crew together and he and they brought a Maori, a Maori elder.
[00:24:34] [SPEAKER_06]: Maori are the Polynesian indigenous people there.
[00:24:37] [SPEAKER_06]: And they came and they did a little performance.
[00:24:40] [SPEAKER_06]: As on you did a haka.
[00:24:42] [SPEAKER_06]: She was listening.
[00:24:43] [SPEAKER_06]: You were so listening.
[00:24:45] [SPEAKER_06]: The rest of these people.
[00:24:47] [SPEAKER_06]: But no, I'm kidding.
[00:24:49] [SPEAKER_06]: So so he this elder, this village elder, basically, he said a prayer and all this stuff.
[00:24:55] [SPEAKER_06]: And he said, listen, you know, we want you to be stewards of this land.
[00:25:01] [SPEAKER_06]: You're going to be all over this country.
[00:25:03] [SPEAKER_06]: You're going to be all over this land and what you want the land to protect you.
[00:25:08] [SPEAKER_06]: What the land to take care of you, what you do to take care of the land.
[00:25:12] [SPEAKER_06]: And he said it's been here long before you and it'll be here long after you.
[00:25:17] [SPEAKER_06]: And I told that story to these Polynesian indigenous people before this race.
[00:25:23] [SPEAKER_06]: And everybody was crying because because people don't appreciate it sometimes.
[00:25:30] [SPEAKER_06]: Tourists don't necessarily appreciate it in that way.
[00:25:34] [SPEAKER_06]: So to me, go doing Doug and 50 first dates, which is beloved by so many people.
[00:25:40] [SPEAKER_06]: And now when I come to conventions, people are dressed as Doug with the hat and the hook thing or whatever.
[00:25:46] [SPEAKER_06]: So I could definitely wear it when I'm there.
[00:25:48] [SPEAKER_06]: But to me, when I go to that place, it's like a sacred place.
[00:25:51] [SPEAKER_06]: And I just yeah.
[00:25:54] [SPEAKER_06]: So that that's that's how I feel about Hawaii.
[00:25:56] [SPEAKER_09]: That's awesome.
[00:25:57] [SPEAKER_09]: That's awesome.
[00:25:58] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
[00:25:59] [SPEAKER_10]: All right. Let's get these questions.
[00:26:02] [SPEAKER_04]: First of all, my face hurts from smiling so much today.
[00:26:06] [SPEAKER_06]: That's a good thing.
[00:26:08] [SPEAKER_04]: So I was wondering of all the characters that you've played, which one is the hardest for you to to differentiate between yourself and the character?
[00:26:16] [SPEAKER_04]: Like which one has the most.
[00:26:17] [SPEAKER_06]: That's a nice way to ask that question.
[00:26:20] [SPEAKER_06]: Well, it's a really nice way to ask that question.
[00:26:22] [SPEAKER_06]: Rudy probably Rudy probably because I am Rudy.
[00:26:25] [SPEAKER_06]: I am we all are in a sense.
[00:26:27] [SPEAKER_06]: But but I Rudy, I've wanted things in this world.
[00:26:32] [SPEAKER_06]: I've wanted to you know, my undergraduate degree.
[00:26:35] [SPEAKER_06]: I've wanted you know, when I got married, when I was just very young and people like, what are you doing?
[00:26:39] [SPEAKER_06]: Well, my career, my filmmaking, like just all that my union work that like everything I do, I I'm just so earnest about it.
[00:26:50] [SPEAKER_06]: And I'm and I don't and I can tell that people are like skeptical or judgmental or like, hey, why are you doing that?
[00:26:57] [SPEAKER_06]: Why don't you do the thing that's going to make millions of dollars?
[00:27:00] [SPEAKER_06]: Why don't you do the you know, and I'm like, I want to do this.
[00:27:02] [SPEAKER_06]: This is what my heart is telling me is what I think my destiny is and and what my mission is on this planet.
[00:27:08] [SPEAKER_06]: And so I do that.
[00:27:09] [SPEAKER_06]: And that's how Rudy is.
[00:27:11] [SPEAKER_06]: You know, he lived his life like with intensity and and and a little like unnecessary like Encino Man was like really fast.
[00:27:20] [SPEAKER_06]: It was a fun movie.
[00:27:20] [SPEAKER_06]: I was miserable making it because I was thinking I'm an important actor.
[00:27:24] [SPEAKER_06]: And it took me until I was in my 30s or 40s to realize that like not that important.
[00:27:32] [SPEAKER_06]: You know what I mean?
[00:27:33] [SPEAKER_06]: Like you should enjoy the funerary.
[00:27:38] [SPEAKER_06]: You should enjoy.
[00:27:39] [SPEAKER_06]: So I wish I get that's maybe one regret I have in my life.
[00:27:41] [SPEAKER_06]: I would go back and I just was with Polly Shore actually, but interacting.
[00:27:46] [SPEAKER_06]: But so I I feel like that one is that one is the closest to me.
[00:27:51] [SPEAKER_06]: Sam wise, on the other hand, is not hard to differentiate because he's pure.
[00:28:02] [SPEAKER_06]: So and I'm not pure.
[00:28:05] [SPEAKER_04]: I was hoping you'd say, yeah, yeah.
[00:28:08] [SPEAKER_06]: Well, I mean, Sam is what you'd want to be the hardest to differentiate yourself from.
[00:28:15] [SPEAKER_06]: But but I'm also like Sam in a lot of ways.
[00:28:17] [SPEAKER_06]: I am honest.
[00:28:19] [SPEAKER_06]: I am honest.
[00:28:21] [SPEAKER_06]: I have integrity.
[00:28:22] [SPEAKER_06]: I am I'm sincere.
[00:28:25] [SPEAKER_06]: You know, I try to be an authentic person and not always can't always be.
[00:28:29] [SPEAKER_06]: But but and so and that's what Sam is.
[00:28:32] [SPEAKER_06]: And so those quality, you know, Sam is brave.
[00:28:35] [SPEAKER_06]: I don't know.
[00:28:37] [SPEAKER_06]: My my bravery has maybe not been tested very much in my life, maybe a few times it has.
[00:28:42] [SPEAKER_06]: There's different kinds of bravery.
[00:28:44] [SPEAKER_06]: But, you know, his he is I'm more like Frodo.
[00:28:48] [SPEAKER_06]: I'm more like Frodo's.
[00:28:49] [SPEAKER_06]: Frodo's interested in the world, you know, in the world that's out there.
[00:28:53] [SPEAKER_06]: He's curious.
[00:28:54] [SPEAKER_06]: You know, Sam is happy at home like, yeah, we wanted to see the elves and now we have.
[00:28:58] [SPEAKER_06]: So now it's time to go home.
[00:29:00] [SPEAKER_06]: And I think as I'm getting older, I'm sort of feeling that way.
[00:29:04] [SPEAKER_06]: My wife said something to me the other day that she's never said in 33 years of marriage.
[00:29:08] [SPEAKER_06]: She goes, why don't you start saying no sometimes?
[00:29:13] [SPEAKER_06]: I'm like somebody offers me a job.
[00:29:15] [SPEAKER_06]: I'm like, let's go do it.
[00:29:17] [SPEAKER_06]: You know, I'm doing college.
[00:29:18] [SPEAKER_06]: Boop, do union.
[00:29:19] [SPEAKER_06]: Bob, you do this army stuff.
[00:29:20] [SPEAKER_06]: Go do this, go do that.
[00:29:21] [SPEAKER_06]: And at a certain point, she's like, you know, you have to take care of your body better.
[00:29:26] [SPEAKER_06]: You have to like, you know, marshal your your spirit basically.
[00:29:31] [SPEAKER_06]: So don't just go everywhere all at once.
[00:29:36] [SPEAKER_06]: Thank you for coming to Idaho.
[00:29:38] [SPEAKER_06]: Yeah, it's good to be back.
[00:29:39] [SPEAKER_09]: There's one thing I want to tell you just before and I was going to say, I feel really bad guys were being told we have to rap.
[00:29:45] [SPEAKER_06]: So no, no, I told you this is not happening.
[00:29:47] [SPEAKER_06]: These people have to ask their questions.
[00:29:48] [SPEAKER_06]: I told you cannot.
[00:29:49] [SPEAKER_06]: I told I predicted that they cannot do that to people who stand up.
[00:29:53] [SPEAKER_09]: But I also said we can give you five minutes.
[00:29:54] [SPEAKER_06]: They're saying, yeah, I've been told I have five minutes by her.
[00:29:59] [SPEAKER_06]: Well, Wendy, Wendy is my is my is my overlord.
[00:30:04] [SPEAKER_06]: Basically, but but I want to see how long it takes them to remove us when I want to stay and they all want to stay right.
[00:30:15] [SPEAKER_06]: So yeah.
[00:30:17] [SPEAKER_06]: And then and then and then Mark's like, and your contract says, oh, my goodness.
[00:30:24] [SPEAKER_06]: So quick, quick, quick.
[00:30:27] [SPEAKER_05]: Did you think your character Bob Newby would have such an impact on the younger generation?
[00:30:31] [SPEAKER_05]: I was an 80s child.
[00:30:33] [SPEAKER_05]: My daughter fell in love with fell in love with from Stranger Things.
[00:30:38] [SPEAKER_05]: Do you kind of remind me of Alex in the show?
[00:30:44] [SPEAKER_06]: Your voice is so strong.
[00:30:47] [SPEAKER_06]: Anyhow, as a matter of fact, yes, because the first season had been so spectacularly successful that and you know, I was invited to be on the show.
[00:30:58] [SPEAKER_06]: And you just know like my job on the show is not to mess up.
[00:31:01] [SPEAKER_06]: And in a way, he was kind of like he could have been a minor, like an expendable character.
[00:31:07] [SPEAKER_06]: He's brought in to be sympathetic and die.
[00:31:10] [SPEAKER_06]: So but because when I were so close, we really love each other.
[00:31:14] [SPEAKER_06]: And and when the first take of the first shot that Bob is in the kid, the boys are in the room and they're he's trying to reassure that will like, hey, listen, there there's different kinds of people in this world.
[00:31:27] [SPEAKER_06]: There's Billy Idol people and there's Kenny Rogers people.
[00:31:30] [SPEAKER_06]: And I go Kenny Rogers.
[00:31:32] [SPEAKER_06]: I love Kenny Rogers.
[00:31:34] [SPEAKER_06]: And you're like that.
[00:31:35] [SPEAKER_06]: You just knew the second I said that the tone, the context, the idea, everything that had happened in the whole first season.
[00:31:42] [SPEAKER_06]: You're like that guy you want that.
[00:31:43] [SPEAKER_06]: And all I said was, please let me do something heroic.
[00:31:46] [SPEAKER_06]: Please let me do and I was expecting like, you know, maybe push her out of the way if a bus was coming.
[00:31:51] [SPEAKER_06]: But then and I never knew.
[00:31:53] [SPEAKER_06]: And then that eighth episode came in and I got to be Ripley from aliens.
[00:31:58] [SPEAKER_06]: And, you know, awesome.
[00:31:59] [SPEAKER_06]: All right. There you go.
[00:32:00] [SPEAKER_06]: Quick. They're gonna get mad at me.
[00:32:02] [SPEAKER_06]: Yeah, thank you.
[00:32:05] [SPEAKER_00]: Huge fan of the film Rudy.
[00:32:07] [SPEAKER_00]: Are you able to share a few of the motivational speeches from the Notre Dame?
[00:32:12] [SPEAKER_06]: I'll do one.
[00:32:16] [SPEAKER_00]: Well, just a few.
[00:32:18] [SPEAKER_06]: Let me say this one is my favorite one in the movie and I didn't even realize it was good until the one of the producers.
[00:32:25] [SPEAKER_06]: We were standing in a line and like a photo call or something.
[00:32:28] [SPEAKER_06]: And he said it and I was like, oh, my God.
[00:32:30] [SPEAKER_06]: I mean, I've seen the movie a bunch of seen that too, but I never realized it meant something to him.
[00:32:34] [SPEAKER_06]: He was like an elite kind of guy, like, you know, upper crust kind of guy.
[00:32:39] [SPEAKER_06]: And yet that meant something to him.
[00:32:40] [SPEAKER_06]: And all of a sudden I went into it.
[00:32:42] [SPEAKER_06]: So it's when they're in the lunchroom and it's Rudy's birthday and Pete gives him the jacket and and really tries it on.
[00:32:48] [SPEAKER_06]: He loves it so much.
[00:32:49] [SPEAKER_06]: And he goes, you know, Pete, you're the only one who ever took me serious.
[00:32:52] [SPEAKER_06]: And Pete says, well, my dad said having dreams is what makes life tolerable.
[00:32:57] [SPEAKER_06]: Right? Yeah.
[00:32:58] [SPEAKER_06]: That's OK.
[00:32:59] [SPEAKER_06]: That's good.
[00:33:01] [SPEAKER_09]: I'm being told my life is being like put on the line for this now.
[00:33:05] [SPEAKER_09]: I'm OK if we can't.
[00:33:07] [SPEAKER_09]: What?
[00:33:07] [SPEAKER_09]: I'm OK if I can't.
[00:33:08] [SPEAKER_09]: Just go quick.
[00:33:09] [SPEAKER_06]: Go for it.
[00:33:11] [SPEAKER_01]: So this scene on the stairs when Frodo tells Sam to go home.
[00:33:14] [SPEAKER_06]: Yeah.
[00:33:15] [SPEAKER_01]: When I watch that, it's Mikey and she well did that come from the same place when you were doing it?
[00:33:26] [SPEAKER_06]: It's my mom.
[00:33:31] [SPEAKER_09]: I'm going to cry now.
[00:33:34] [SPEAKER_03]: Before you say anything.
[00:33:35] [SPEAKER_03]: Yes, I was.
[00:33:36] [SPEAKER_03]: I am the Finn character.
[00:33:38] [SPEAKER_03]: I just happen to have a cat hoodie.
[00:33:39] [SPEAKER_03]: If you haven't done Lord of the Rings, what would you have done and why?
[00:33:45] [SPEAKER_06]: Well, Star Wars.
[00:33:49] [SPEAKER_09]: Well, nerds, once again, at this point in the show, my computer lost memory again.
[00:33:54] [SPEAKER_09]: Sean would have stayed on stage the entire day and had conversations with all of his fans.
[00:33:58] [SPEAKER_09]: Unfortunately, they needed him back on the floor.
